At an age when most children are only beginning to discover the joy of numbers, Yasin Tafsir Abhi has already taken his mathematical skills to an international stage. The second-grade student from Sherpur has won two gold medals at the World’s Largest International Abacus Olympiad, earning the titles “Champion of Champions” and “Supreme Champion” in two different stages of the competition.
For a child still in primary school, the achievement is remarkable. But behind the medals is a story of curiosity, discipline, practice and a willingness to learn something beyond the regular classroom curriculum.
A Young Mind with a Passion for Numbers
Yasin Tafsir Abhi is a student of Cambridge Model School in Mymensingh. Originally from Jhenaigati in Sherpur, he is the elder son of media professional Imran Hasan Rabbi and Jharna Akter.Abhi’s recent success has brought considerable pride to his family and community. His achievement has also attracted attention because of the age at which he has begun competing internationally. His journey demonstrates an increasingly important idea in children’s education: academic development does not have to be limited to textbooks and examinations. Skills such as mental calculation, concentration, memory and problem-solving can also play an important role in a child’s intellectual development. For Abhi, one of those skills is abacus calculation.
What Is an Abacus?
An abacus is a traditional calculation tool consisting of beads arranged on rods or grooves. Although mechanical and electronic calculators have transformed everyday mathematics, abacus-based learning continues to be used in many educational programs, particularly for children. With training and repeated practice, learners can become increasingly familiar with numerical patterns and mental calculation techniques. Abacus education is often associated with skills such as concentration, visualization, memory and calculation speed. For young learners, the attraction is not simply about producing an answer quickly. Regular practice requires attention and accuracy, while competitions introduce an additional challenge: solving problems under time pressure. This is the environment in which Abhi has been developing his skills.
From Online Training to the International Stage
Abhi received his abacus training online through an organization called Edutune. After successfully completing the junior level, he has moved on to the advanced level of training. His progress eventually led him to the World’s Largest International Abacus Olympiad, organized by Brain School, described by the organizers as an education partner of the International Olympiad Federation.According to information provided by the organizers, around 1,500 participants from approximately 14 countries took part in the competition. For a young participant from a small town in Bangladesh, reaching an international competition of this scale was itself a significant milestone. Abhi, however, went beyond participation. He won.
Two Competitions, Two Gold Medals
The competition was held in two major stages. The first stage took place on December 21, 2025. Competing at the junior level, Abhi delivered an outstanding performance and secured the title “Champion of Champions.”That result qualified him to continue his journey toward the final stage. The second stage was held on March 2, 2026. Once again, Abhi maintained his performance and won the title “Supreme Champion.”With victories in both stages, the young Bangladeshi finished his campaign with two gold medals. The achievement was reportedly followed by a special certificate of recognition from the Book of World Records. Claims relating to world records, however, are best understood alongside the specific record category and the issuing organization’s verification criteria.
More Than Speed
Abacus competitions are often associated with speed, but speed alone does not explain the discipline required to perform consistently.A child must learn calculation techniques, recognize numerical patterns and maintain concentration while working through problems. Even a small lapse in attention can affect an answer. That makes Abhi’s achievement particularly interesting from an educational perspective. His success is not simply about being able to calculate quickly. It reflects a combination of learning, repetition, concentration and competitive experience. His trainers have emphasized the importance of regular practice, focus and the ability to perform calculations quickly and accurately. These are skills that can take considerable time to develop.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Abhi’s interests extend beyond abacus.Alongside his mathematical training, he has also developed skills in spoken English. His family says that he has shown an interest in learning new things from an early age. That curiosity may be one of the most important parts of his story. For children, learning does not always begin with a competition or an award. It often begins with a simple question: How does this work? When curiosity is encouraged, that question can lead a child from one skill to another. In Abhi’s case, an interest in learning eventually became a structured journey through abacus training and international competition.
A Family’s Pride
Abhi’s achievements have naturally become a source of immense happiness for his family. His father, Imran Hasan Rabbi, is a media professional and currently works as Mymensingh Bureau Chief of DBC News. His mother, Jharna Akter, says that Abhi has always been interested in learning about different things. The family’s support has played an important role in allowing him to continue his training alongside his regular education.Speaking about his son’s achievement, his father described the success as a moment of great happiness for the family and expressed hope that Abhi would participate in bigger competitions in the future and bring further recognition to Bangladesh. His mother also expressed happiness at seeing her son’s interest and dedication rewarded on an international platform.
From Jhenaigati to an International Platform
There is another dimension to Abhi’s story. He comes from Jhenaigati, an upazila of Sherpur, while he currently studies in Mymensingh. His success has therefore generated excitement not only within his immediate family but also among people in his local community. For many children growing up outside the country’s major metropolitan centers, international opportunities can sometimes seem distant.Stories such as Abhi’s can offer a different perspective.Talent can emerge anywhere. What matters is whether a young person receives the opportunity, guidance and encouragement to develop it.Abhi’s journey from a young learner in Bangladesh to a two-time gold medalist in an international abacus competition illustrates precisely that possibility.
The Importance of Encouraging Young Learners
Not every child needs to become an international champion. The more important lesson from Abhi’s journey is that children benefit when their curiosity is taken seriously. Some children enjoy mathematics. Others are drawn to languages, science, music, art, coding, sports or public speaking. Providing opportunities to explore those interests can help children discover strengths that may not always be visible through conventional classroom examinations.Abacus training is one example of such an opportunity. For Abhi, it has provided a way to challenge himself, measure his progress and compete with other young learners from different countries. The medals are the visible result. The less visible achievements—discipline, concentration, confidence and persistence—may prove equally valuable as he grows older.
What Comes Next for Yasin Tafsir Abhi?
Despite his recent international success, Abhi’s journey is still at an early stage. He is currently studying in the second grade and continuing his abacus education at the advanced level. That means there is plenty of time for him to explore new areas, develop his existing skills and discover where his interests ultimately lead. His family hopes that he will continue participating in international competitions and achieve even greater success in the future.Whether his future lies in mathematics, technology, science or an entirely different field remains unknown. And perhaps that is what makes his story especially inspiring. At this stage of his life, Abhi does not need to have his entire future mapped out. He simply needs the opportunity to keep learning.
A Small Beginning with a Big Possibility
Two gold medals can fit in a child’s hands. But the confidence gained from earning them can travel much further.Yasin Tafsir Abhi’s achievement is a reminder that remarkable potential can appear at a very young age—and that children can surprise the world when curiosity is combined with practice and opportunity. For Bangladesh, his story is another example of young talent reaching beyond national borders. For other children, perhaps the most important message is even simpler:
Learning something new today can become the beginning of something extraordinary tomorrow.
At just the beginning of his educational journey, Yasin Tafsir Abhi has already taken his first major steps onto the international stage. His next chapter has yet to be written.
