The Question is How Long Does It take to Develop a Vaccine? In the last 50 years, the world has seen quite a few deadly epidemics. It includes Zika virus, Chicken pox, Hepatitis B, Ebola, Aids, Sars virus, Mers virus, and Covid-19, the deadly pandemic that the world is now dealing with. If we take a close look at the statistics of last 50 years, we get to know about when these viruses were first identified and how long it took for their vaccines to be developed.

What is the Zika virus and how will it affect me - Insider
Effect of Zika

Zika virus :

First identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys, Zika was later identified in humans in 1952. The first large outbreak of disease caused by Zika infection was reported from the Island of Yap in 2007. There are currently several countries experiencing Zika virus outbreaks and researchers are still working to come up with its vaccine.

Effect of Chicken Pox

Chicken Pox:

First identified in 1953, chickenpox (also called varicella) still exists, both in the United States and all over the world. The chickenpox vaccine was introduced in 1995 in the United States. Prior to that time, about 4 million people (mostly children) got the infection each year, more than 10,000 people were hospitalized.

Hepatitis B:

The hepatitis B virus was discovered in 1965 by Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery. Although the vaccine for this virus was developed four years after its discovery, the FDA approved a more sophisticated plasma-derived hepatitis B vaccine for human use in 1981.

SARS virus:

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was first discovered in Asia in February 2003. SARS infected more than 8,000 people and killed 774 in 2003. Although a SARS vaccine was  developed, it was never sold since public health measures got the disease under control before it was ready.

Mers Virus

MERS virus:

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Even after eight years of its discovery, its vaccine is yet to be developed.

Coronavirus
Covid-19

COVID-19:

This highly contagious virus, which was first identified in December 2019, in Wuhan, China, has spread to nearly every country in the world. Having claimed 1,14,254 deaths around the world already, it has caused countries to be under complete lockdown and people to be in quarantine all over the world for an indefinite period of time. Around the globe, researchers are working day and night to develop a vaccine to prevent the Novel Coronavirus.

The time period for the development of a vaccine ranges from eight to twenty years. There are many viruses against which, vaccines have not been created, despite decades of research. On top of that, even if a vaccine makes it through all the rounds of testing, it is unlikely that drugmakers can manufacture enough vaccine to protect everyone who might be exposed to the virus. Therefore, instead of running after a vaccine, we should stay home and focus on our work.

Another interesting stunt I performed was riding two horses at a time, which unfortunately didn’t make the cut. Shooting amidst snow-capped mountains wasn’t easy, as it would get foggy at around 3 pm. We would be forced to halt the shoot till the mist cleared. I even had a scene where I had to save my reel brother and his whole body-weight was on me.”

Why Raising Mental Health Awareness is a Must

mental health

The Question is Why Raising Mental Health Awareness is a Must.Do you know how many mental disorders there are? Can you make a quick guess? I presume you cannot. Because the term ‘mental health’ is devalued all over the world. There are over 200 mental illnesses that humans suffer from, among which, depression and anxiety are the most common ones.

mental health

Research says that teenagers are more prone to suffering from mental disorders than people from any other age group. 21.4% of teenagers experience severe mental illness at some point during their teen years. Then why do we not take mental health seriously?

On average, one person dies from suicide every 40 seconds somewhere in the world. Therefore, it is high time we started raising mental health awareness among people in our country. We must let our teenagers know that if they ever feel mentally or emotionally unwell, there are always professionals they can seek help from.

mental health

Kaan Pete Roi (KPR), Bangladesh’s first emotional support helpline is doing a great job in raising mental health awareness all over the country. However, we need many more of these helplines. We need to have more students studying in the department of Psychology. We need to have more doctors specializing in Psychiatry. Because whether or not we like to admit it, mental health is even more important than physical health, as unlike the latter, its symptoms are noticeable to the sufferers only.

Even though she was mistaken for a child, she’s not even that young. She was a young lady. No one will think of her as a street seller on the first glance. Because she was wearing a blue shirt with jeans and converse on her legs. She was wearing headphones.

Tahmina Kotha

What more do you need! This is her elite personality! On approaching nearer, it was seen that she had a bag on her back and a basket hung up from her neck from which she was selling nuts in little packets. But the buyers were hesitant to think of her as a ‘seller’. Everyone is surprised! When i went near and asked her questions, she informed her name was Tahmina Rahman. 23 years old. Family and friends call her “Kotha”.

She’s a student of management department in lalmatia women’s college. She was born in Saturia upazila in Manikganj. Now resisiding in Dhanmondi. Father Habibur Rahman, works in Saturia hospital; her mother used to work in the same hospital. But after her mother died in 2008, her father became lonely, moreover his daughter had to move to Dhaka for persuing her studies. After finishing high school (HSC) , she was offered to study in Malaysia.

After that even though her whole family wanted to settle in Malaysia, she didn’t want to go. She wants to do something in her own country. She had a wish to make people accept any kind of clothes people wear since her birth. But she was not getting any confidence at first. But later she was inspired by a handsome seller Tajul Islam Likhon’s ‘dream van’.

Tahmina Kotha

Even though she was a girl from a aristocratic family, she got inspired by Likhon and started selling nuts in the city’s ‘rajpoth’. Now smart Kotha is selling nuts in different places of Dhanmondi. She buys nuts from saturia in the price of 80 tk to 90 tk per kg. She takes them home and sorts them out. Then she puts them in aesthetic looking black packets and sells them to buyers.

Doing this, in a few hours she earns 200 to 250 taka and goes home. She wants to prove the world that no work is less important so that people respect every work no matter what it is. She also informed that she used to work in a reknowned call centre. She left that job and started selling nuts. She loves independent life. Every work is mighty. Work is always work. She said she did not find any difference in working in a travel agency and selling nuts.

These type of thinking changes people’s minds. That’s why she thinks people should work hard in every jobs instead of being sad. She also said, some people aim to be doctors or engineers. But not everyone’s dream come true. They get frustrated. They choose the bad path by becoming thieves and robbers. But those who are happy with any kind of jobs are successful. She didn’t like the job at travel agency. She didn’t like to be time bound. But she’s loving the job of selling nuts as it has some independence. After finishing her classes at lalmatia women’s college, she goes home and she sells nuts when her friends hang out.

I asked her whether she’s having any difficulty selling nuts. In reply, she said most people don’t want to believe she’s a nut seller. Some people end up asking whether she is here to ask for help for someone. Then she tells them that she is here to help herself and she wants to do something. She also said that it doesn’t matter how much she earns selling nuts. She wants to tell every boys and girls that they should do something for the country instead of spending time lazily at home!

Beauty Queen Hangs Up Her Crown to return Work.During this global pandemic, Miss England Bhasha Mukherjee has decided to swap her crown for stethoscope.

Bhasha Mukherjee is of Bengali ethnicity and had migrated to England with her parents at the age of nine. Despite growing up and completing her studies abroad, she did not forget her mother tongue Bengali.

Upon graduating from medical college, she started her career as a junior doctor. In the meantime, out of mere curiosity, she signed up her name for Miss World Beauty Pageant, which took place at around the same time. Beating hundreds of contestants, she won the title “Miss England 2019” and later represented England in the Miss World Beauty Pageant.

Being Miss England required her to take a career break as a junior doctor and focus on humanitarian work until August this year. As an ambassador for several charities, she had to travel to Africa, Turkey and many Asian countries. Meanwhile, the deadly coronavirus spread across many countries including England, infecting and killing people all over the world. As the situation worsened, Mukherjee started getting messages from former colleagues at her old hospital in Boston, eastern England, telling her how hard it was for them. People expect a beauty queen to simply wear her crown and look glamorous. However, to her, it felt wrong to be wearing her Miss England Crown, even for humanitarian work, while people around the world were dying from coronavirus and her colleagues were working so hard. Therefore she decided to contact the hospital’s management to let them know that she wanted to return to work.

Hanging up her crown, she will now pick up her stethoscope and return to the hospital. She is now a inspirational person all over the world. She is becoming the brave girl who always love to help people in their unwanted situation.

Love for Orphans

Love for Orphans. With Eid nearing us, many service holders are eagerly waiting for the long-awaited holidays as well as the Eid bonus provided by their respective companies. Eid al-Adha holds great significance for muslims all over the world. According to their individual abilities, they all observe this occasion by performing animal sacrifice.

The Blessing of Blessing Others: God's Heart for Widows & Orphans ...

Although cattle markets in Dhaka are not yet in full swing, people who are planning to celebrate Eid in their villages, have already sent money to their family members living there. If the odds are in their favour, then people will at length enjoy their holidays and upload photos on Facebook, before returning to this busy city.

But here I am, thinking about the Azimpur Shishu Nibash (Children’s Home), the Kishore Unnayan Kendro in Tongi and the Kishori Unnayan Kendra at Konabari, Gazipur. I can overlook the the last two, but Azimpur Shishu Nibash? Well, this one has gotten stuck in my head. For the abandoned children living there, Eid is just another uneventful day.

Children in Azimpur Shishu Nibash

The fact that there are no specific laws for child adoption in Bangladesh has not stopped people from adopting children amidst numerous complications. According to sociologists, due to various reasons, the number of childless couples is increasing, many of whom are showing their interest in adopting a child.

If a couple wants to take responsibility of an abandoned child, they have to file a petition for guardianship with the court. “I often go to the children’s home. Spending time with them is something I enjoy. If the laws were less complicated, I would raise one of them as my own child.”, says Zayeda Sharmin, an assistant professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Due to the complexity in the law for adopting a child, she could not take responsibility of that orphan.

Whether it is from a hospital, a government or non-government safe home, the process for child adoption appears to be complicated, which discourages everyone. However, guardianship and adoption are different from each other. As there are no laws for adopting a child in Bangladesh, someone who wants to take responsibility of a homeless child will have to do so by following the Family Court Ordinance, 1985. Nevertheless, this is applicable only in the Hindu Laws.

“It is because of the child’s safety that the process is made lengthy, so that we can determine whether or not the child is going to be in good hands. Otherwise, there would be chances for the orphan’s future to be at risk.”, says Advocate Salma Ali. In olden days, failing to father a child, would take a toll on a man’s social status, whereas, infertility would give women the label ‘ill-omened’. Therefore, in Hindu society, child adoption was introduced. In ancient times, this was done for financial or religious purposes. But is the scenario the same for recent times?

A.I. Mahbub, a professor from the department of Sociology in Dhaka University says, in modern days, the reasons are psychological and emotional. When faced with infertility, most people, after the age of forty, decide to foster a child to overcome loneliness.

Even when a child is adopted after the completion of a lengthy, complicated legal process, he or she will still not be allowed to claim his or her parents’ properties. That is because Bangladesh, being a muslim majority country follows the Islamic rules. Dr. Saiyad Abdullah Al-Maruf said that according to Islam, adopted children do not have any share in inheritance. In fact, they will not even have their guardian’s surname. However, the guardians can donate their properties to the child if they want.” After the death of the guardians, relatives deprive the child of his/her share in the properties and unfortunately enough, there is no law to prevent such deed.”, says professor Shahnaz Huda from the Department of Law, Dhaka University.

In many countries of the world, adopted children have the same rights as biological children, when it comes to inheritance. But in Bangladesh, the law is not the same for all religions. “We believe, it would be better for a child to be raised in a family instead of an orphanage. Therefore, we hope to make the matters easier to deal with.”, said Nasima Begum. She added that once the law is formulated, people will be allowed to bring homeless children under Government supervision to their own families. Moreover, until the age of eighteen, the whole process of them being raised will be observed by the Government. It is believed that afterwards, they will be able to take responsibility for themselves.

Childhood Trauma

What is childhood trauma?

Childhood Trauma is defined as a physical or psychological threat or assault to a child’s physical integrity, sense of self, safety or survival or to the physical safety of another person significant to the child. Early childhood traumas (those that happens before the age of six) lie at the root of most long-term depression and anxiety, and many emotional and psychological illness.

Flawed system robs children of their childhood

Due to traumatic experiences children are susceptible to psychological disorders and serious emotional turmoil, often needing the assistance provided in trauma therapy. These experiences may be positive or negative, ranging in their severity. Some of these experiences occur on a semi-regular basis, and others only happen once. Despite their varying factors however, each of these events make an impact in the life of a child. In some cases trauma treatment centers are incorporated to help the child overcome such trauma.

Symptoms of Trauma in Children: A child can react in a number of different ways as a result of trauma. The following are some examples:

  • Anxiety, Terror
  • Withdrawn from others
  • Constantly alert
  • Re-enactment of situation with various objects
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Lack of energy
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Poor self-image
  • Bedwetting
  • Guilty feelings
  • Shows signs of obsessive or compulsive behaviors
  • Panic attacks
  • Recurrent nightmares, flashbacks
  • Shyness
  • Pain
  • Avoidance of situations similar to the traumatic event
  • Inability to give or receive proper love and affection

Effects of Trauma in children:

  • Self-injury
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Depression
  • Drug Abuse (typically requiring the help of a drug rehab facility)
  • Insomnia
  • Promiscuity
  • Difficulty learning, Struggling in school
  • Brain alterations
  • Suicide
  • Eating disorders which sometimes may require the attention of a qualified eating disorder treatment center.
  • Extreme anger and hostility

In some cases, trauma is not immediately evident. Sometimes trauma does not show up until much later in life or until it is triggered by certain circumstances. In these cases, drug abuse is common and is often so severe that drug rehab at a drug treatment center is needed.

Areesha Ifra Kamal

Brain Alterations from Trauma: When trauma occurs in someone early in life the brain is much more susceptible to drastic alteration. Many of the children exposed to such events will develop neuropsychiatric symptomatology. During a traumatic experience, various areas of the brain respond. These areas are often altered as a result, permanently impacting future functioning in the brain. After these alterations, if recovery is to be sought, special trauma therapy sessions are necessary to attempt to activate parts of the brain.

Areesha Ifra Kamal

Types of childhood Trauma:

Community Violence: community violenceincludes predatory violence (robbery for instance) and violence that comes from personal conflicts. Shootings, rapes, stabbings and beatings.

Complex Trauma: The term complex trauma describes the problem of children’s exposure and the multiple or prolonged traumatic events and the impact of thus exposure on their development. Results in emotional deregulation and the loss of safety, direction and the ability to detect or respond to danger cues.

Domestic Violence: Domestic violence includes actual or threatened physical or sexual violence or emotional abuse between adults in an intimate relationship. Studies suggest that the majority of children who are exposed to domestic violence are young under the age of 8.

Early Childhood Trauma: Early childhood trauma generally refers to the traumatic experiences that occur to children aged 0-6. Young children also may experience traumatic stress in response to painful medical procedures or the sudden loss of a parent/caregiver.

Areesha Ifra Kamal

Medical Trauma: Medical traumatic stress refers to reactions that children and their families may have to pain, injury and serious illness; or to ”invasive” medical procedures (such as surgery) or treatments (such as burn care) that are sometimes frightening.

Physical Abuse: Physical abuse means causing or attempting to cause physical pain or injury. It can result from punching, beating, kicking, burning or harming a child in other ways. Sometimes, an injury occurs when a punishment is not appropriate for a child’s age or condition.

Sexual Abuse: Child sexual abuse includes a wide range of sexual behaviors that take place between a child and an older person or alternatively between a child and another child/adolescent.

Treatment of childhood Trauma:

TF-CBT

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a components-based model of psychotherapy that addresses the unique needs of children with PTSD symptoms, depression, behavior problems and other difficulties related to traumatic life experiences. TF-CBT is short-term treatment approach that can work in as few 12 sessions. It also may be provided for longer periods of the time depending on the child’s and family’s needs. Individual sessions for the child and for the parents or caregivers, as well as joint parent child session, are part of the treatment. The specific components of TF_CBT are summarized by the acronym practice:

  • Psychoeducation
  • Relaxation and stress management skills
  • Affective expression and modulation
  • Cognitive coping and processing
  • Trauma narration
  • In vivo mastery of trauma reminders
  • Conjoint child-parent sessions
  • Enhancing future safety and development

TF-CBT primarily reduces symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Intrusive and upsetting memories, thoughts or dreams about the trauma, avoidance of things, situations or people which are trauma reminders, emotional numbing, physical reactions of hyper arousal, trouble concentrating or irritability.

In addition to improving PTSD symptoms, TF-CBT results in improvements in:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Behavior problems
  • Sexualized behaviors
  • Trauma-related shame
  • Interpersonal trust
  • Social competence

When children experience serious traumas, other family members are affected as well. This is why TF-CBT typically includes parents or caregivers in treatment. TF-CBT is effective in helping parents to:

  • Overcome general feelings of depression
  • Reduce PTSD symptoms
  • Reduce emotional distress about the child’s trauma
  • Improve parenting practices
  • Enhance their ability to sort their children

Neel
Neel

Right at the break of dawn, when the air all across the courtyard and every corner in the house was subdued in sweet smell of bakul flowers- a melodious voice was sensed, pouring in through the south window, uttering the lines, ” Bring me Bael flowers, I want no Bakul….I don’t want any Hena, mango inflorescence is what my desire.”

The enchanting smell made me follow the voice. Going by the window, what my eyes showed me was as if a little prince playing on a harmonium and singing, lost in his own world. He also started taking singing lessons only at the age of four. His mother used to learn singing too, at the Boshonto Bahar Academy in Narayanganj. Later on she couldn’t continue owing to her shift to Dhaka. One day later, when Neel’s mom met her old music teacher, it was him, who advised her to let Neel get admitted to music school. After 5 years of lessons there, Neel is now in the very famous Chhayanat Musical Academy finishing his second year, in the course of introductory music.

Neel’s Hobbies: Singing and listening to music, traveling, photography and modelling

His favorite hobby is traveling, he really loves exploring new places. When he has asked to choose between the mountain or the sea, he opted for the sea straight away. Whenever the school is off, he sets off for trips around different parts of the country with his family. He says he loves sports, too, though his mom says that he doesn’t want to go out to play at all.

Other qualities of Neel:

Neel is very energetic as a kid. He likes to study, but doesn’t like to give tests at all. His teachers agree too, that he is quite responsive in the class. He is also the class monitor. Though he’s so active in all other places, one funny story about him is that he feels lazy to complete vast amount of writing during examination. He fills in his answer scripts as much as his whim and then leaves. He talks a lot. His mother, sometimes gets so irritated, prefers her loving child to be quieter. But alas, who would stop little Neel! After all he learnt, ” I will be the morning bird, chirping out in the flower garden before everyone else!” So who will give our energetic spirit, if our boy, who wants to wake everybody up like a morning bird with his tune, is rather dull and quiet!?

Neel’s mother have long lastdly cherished a desire that he would master classical songs, and she trains him for it, too. But his little prince sometimes wishes, “I will see the whole world holding it in my palm!”, so he explores the world of western music too, and he sings English pop songs whenever he gets time. Hearing him sing those songs, his mother likes it mostly, again feels slightly upset too, at times.

Neel is engaged in modelling too sometimes. His friends get very amused when they see him make it to the newspapers with his modelling. It just feels unbelievable to them seeing such a close friend of theirs in the news. All in all, Neel is like a solitary blue bird flying high in the blue sky with everyone’s love, in high spirits. Everyone adores him, calling him Shankha neel.

Shankha Neel is the only child to the couple of Abu Muhammad Abdus Samad and Amina Parvin Labonno Lipi.

Eshal Mahmud- A Mensa Member

Eshal Mahmud- A Mensa Member. If we are to make a list of the most intelligent people in the world, the person topping the list would undoubtedly be Einstein. Although one can refer to many other geniuses, the first one to come to his mind would be none other than Albert Einstein. When a child asks a brilliant question or answers one, we praise them, giving the label “Future Einstein”. However, Stephen Hawking, despite being an equally famous scientist, is not usually referred to in such cases.

Einstein was a member of Mensa. Does anyone know what his IQ was? 160!!! Many of you may question whether IQ is measurable or not. Well, of course it is. IQ can be determined by examining the answers to some really tricky questions. Now the question is, is there an organisation that conducts such tests?

Yes, there is and it is known as Mensa. Mensa is a non-profit organisation that gives its membership to people who score at the 98th percentile or higher on an IQ test. Albert Einstein and Stephen hawking were both members of Mensa.

Surprisingly, Mensa has memebers with IQ level higher than that of Einstein’s and one of them is a twelve-year-old BAngladeshi girl named Eshal Mahmud.

Eshal lives in England with her mom, dad and younger brother. Every year, England organises a competition to find the most talented and intelligent child in Britain. Among thousands of contestants, Eshal Mahmud was one, who also happened to be a member of Mensa. Beating innumerable contestants, Eshal is now in top 5 !

Farhad Mahmud (father) and Mumtaz Mahmud (mother) are Eshal’s parents. Since they both work and mostly stay outside, questions like “Who was there to give her time?” and “Who was there to inspire her?” can surely arise. Interestingly enough, her maternal uncle, Imran, an Oxford alumnus, was her constant source of encouragement.

Effortlessly answering questions after questions, she has not only astonished the judges, but has also won the hearts of the people who were watching her from television. when we visited Eshal’s house, we saw countless medals, certificates , crests at which her younger brother looks in awe, wondering how someone can be so smart. Have we told you what her IQ is? Well, it is even higher than that of Einstein’s and Hawking’s. Yes, her IQ is 162!!! Only a handful of people in this world have an IQ that is equal to or above 160.

Sadly enough, many geniuses like Eshal Mahmud , who perhaps live in our house or neighbourhood go unnoticed. It is high time we recognised these unnamed flowers that may not grow in our own garden and nurtured them so that they can flourish.

Nowadays, everyone runs after an A+,as if it is all one needs in life. A quick question to you all- Did Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Rabindranath Tagore, Mark Zuckerberg get an A+ when they were in high school? I assume, there was no ‘A+’ back then, but something similar surely was! We should focus more on learning than earning a perfect grade in order to be like Eshal Mahmud and make everyone proud.

We totally believe that there are many others like Eshal Mahmud, who, if nurtured properly, can successfully become members of Mensa.

We are talking about Shreyasi’s Remarkable Social Work. Shreya was Born in Nilphamari, Shreyasi Hazra has been quietly doing a lot to help the poor people in her community for the last four years. It is high time we gave her the recognition she deserves for her outstanding work.

Raised by a single mother, Shreyasi is now only eighteen. Upon graduating from Nilphamari Government Girls’ School in 2016, she decided to invest all her time and energy into tirelessly working to make everyone’s life easier in Domar, Nilphamari. She, being the strong-willed and kind-hearted person she is, does everything in her power to help the people in her community.

Shreyasi started her journey alone by walking from door to door to collect donations from everyone. In every winter, she buys warm clothes and distributes those to the villagers, who would otherwise suffer from cold.

In early 2016, she established the “Maa Welfare Organisation” all by herself. It is not only an organisation that helps people with money and food, but is also a shelter for the homeless people.

As has been stated earlier, Shreyasi does all her social work quietly and refrains from advertising herself. Therefore. we believe that it is high time we put the spot light on youngsters like Shreyasi and not just on celebrities.

This is the story of a young girl.
